To get the most from your work online you have to utilize established systems. 
What separates the good ones from the others are three things:

1. Community - without a strong group for support, you won't survive.
2. Product - it fuels the engine. Find demand in the market and product affordability.
3. System - You're not looking for another job. Find a system that does the work for you.

But don't they all have those things?  The short answer is No.
If you're looking for the obvious thing lacking above it's 4. compensation plan. A good way to find a good comp plan is to find a company that has 1, 2, and 3.  Good companies have good compensation plans and you will be paid.
